Rydal Penrhos
Overview
Rydal
Penrhos combines a traditional curriculum with a modern approach to education,
with high expectations and an emphasis on developing the individual pupil.
'Learning how to learn’ prepares pupils for the next stage of life and our
leavers go on to study at many top universities.
We have 5 boarding houses, for pupils aged 11-18, looked after by experienced
houseparents with a team of academic tutors. The Health Centre and central
pastoral team provide further support. There is a full out-of-hours and weekend
activity programme for boarders and day pupils to ensure good integration of
all pupils.
The main focus of the school is on academic success: this year our A-level
pupils achieved 85% A-C grades, our average IB points score was 31.5, and we
had a 100% A*-C success rate at GCSE(using national statistics). We offer the
IB and A-level in the Sixth form, with a wide range of subjects available in
both programmes.
We provide plenty of stimulus at each stage of education, including careers
testing, university advice, a business convention, Sixth form lectures and a
rich programme of drama, art and music.
As well as traditional team games and indoor sports, we offer others that take
advantage of our location, such as climbing, kayaking and sailing to name a
few.
Unique Points
We are large enough to offer real choice in our academic and extra-curricular programmes and small enough to care for each pupil as an individual. We enjoy the best of both worlds, located on the beautiful North Wales coast, but within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool and Chester. The boarding houses are home from home, and pupils are encouraged to take part and be busy. The activities programme creates a strong sense of belonging. There is careful academic and pastoral monitoring through the boarding and tutoring structures, so that each pupil is supported and encouraged to achieve his or her best.
Entry Requirements
All pupils are required to fill in an application form and submit copies of their last two school reports. An offer of a place will also be subject to satisfactory performances in tests in English and Maths. 16+ entries, in addition to the above, must have a minimum of five or more UK equivalent GCSE passes at C or higher
